Founding Partners

The People of the United Methodist Church

The People of the United Methodist Church have been in mission across Africa for more than 160 years. The denomination’s work in the area of malaria prevention makes it a natural partner for Nothing but Nets. Several global agencies of The United Methodist Church will launch supporting campaigns to educate and raise money for bed nets.

United Nations Foundation

The United Nations Foundation (UN Foundation) was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The UN Foundation is a public charity.

Sports Illustrated

The initial outreach for Nothing But Nets was accomplished through ESPN columnist Rick Reilly's May 5, 2006 column titled "Nothing But Nets" which raised $1.2 million. More than 120,000 bed nets have already been delivered in Nigeria as a result of Reilly’s call to readers who had "ever cut down a net, jumped over a net, watched the New Jersey Nets, worn a hair net, surfed the net, or thought of Angelina Jolie in fishnets" to donate $10 to purchase insecticide-treated nets.

NBA Cares

NBA Cares is the league's social responsibility program that builds on the NBA's long tradition of addressing important social issues in the United States and around the world. Over the next five years, the league, players and teams will continue to contribute $100 million for charity, donate more than 1 million hours of hands-on volunteer service to communities around the world, and build more than 250 places where kids and families can live, learn and play.

Implementing Partners

The Measles Initiative

The Measles Initiative, launched in 2001, is a partnership committed to reducing measles deaths globally, with the goal of cutting measles deaths by 90 percent by 2010 compared to 2000. During its first five years (2001-2005), the Initiative supported the vaccination of more than 217 million children in Africa, saving 1.2 million lives. Through these efforts, measles cases and deaths have dropped by 68 percent worldwide and by 91 percent in Africa, where measles deaths and disability are highest. Building on its success in Africa, the Initiative has expanded into Asia. The Initiative increasingly provides additional life-saving health interventions in its campaigns, including vitamin A, de-worming medicine and insecticide-treated nets for malaria prevention. The Measles Initiative has mobilized more than $308 million through 2006 to support campaigns in more than 43 countries in Africa and Asia. Leading these efforts are the American Red Cross, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United Nations Foundation, UNICEF and World Health Organization.
